Performative quantitative analysis: data-driven talk without the data

Performative Quantitative Analysis. The act of using the language of data-driven decision making... without all that pesky data and analysis.

“We need to increase our close rate” but your sales team tracks leads in personal spreadsheets, so you don’t actually know your close rate.

“This lead gen source is too expensive” except your system doesn’t trace won opportunities back to the lead source, so ROI can’t really be calculated.

“Software development is too slow” except your Jira is a vague stream-of-consciousness of department head requests that were never aligned to strategic goals, so you have no meaningful metrics on development.

Risks of analysis backed by anecdote:

🎭 Instead of measuring the ROI of strategic decisions, you end up rewarding the loudest project champions and the best storytellers.

📉 Margins erode, but you lack the data to trace problems back to specific workflows, products, or initiatives, nor explain them to your board.

Don't misunderstand, instincts have value. Our pattern-matching brains are built to pick out trends and experience hones that ability. But gut feelings fall short as organizations grow and leadership loses visibility into the real drivers underneath. They’re also not very convincing to customers, investors, partners, or your growing staff. Need I even mention regulators feelings on this topic?

Step one is determining the metrics that should truly inform your decision making. Then you'll need to review your systems and processes to find gaps in data collection and data quality.

Word of warning from someone who's been there: do not oversimplify this phase to “add fields to database.” Data model design & governance, data cleanup, integrations for external data, validation rules, UX work to facilitate data entry, process updates, documentation and training are all part of getting to data quality that meaningfully guides decisions.
