Why discovery should always be step one in software development

I had the absolute pleasure of going through the discovery process with a couple dozen nonprofits, including community service organizations providing workforce development and legal aid, environmental groups managing sustainability certifications, and the organization responsible for distributing funds in the U.S. to Holocaust survivors.

My specialty for forcing Salesforce (pun intended) to do things no one had before made me well suited to customizing CRMs that supported those organizations’ good work (I hardly worked with NPSP, despite the common assumption). That same business analysis process can be just as fascinating in the for-profit world, learning new industries and uncovering what makes each client unique within theirs. Gaining that understanding should always be step one in the software development process.

My time at Trajan Wealth has been a deep dive into wealth management generally, and Trajan’s secret sauce more specifically, and I know that experience will serve me well. But I’m looking forward to returning to my version of normalcy: consulting, moving from project to project and gaining fresh insights and experiences in brand-new worlds at every turn.
